Kent Residents Directory Lookup
The Kent Residents Directory is your starting point to find public records about people who live, work, or file matters in Kent, Washington. Use it to look up municipal court files, police records, city clerk records, and recorded property data tied to local residents. Most resident records pass through the Kent City Clerk, the Kent Municipal Court, and the King County Superior Court Clerk. The city follows the state Public Records Act, so most non-exempt records are open to the public. This page walks you through the right office, the right portal, and the right form to search Kent resident information fast.
How the Kent Residents Directory Works
Kent sits in south King County and is one of the largest cities in the state. The city handles its own public records under Chapter 1.05 of the Kent Municipal Code. That chapter ties directly to the Washington Public Records Act at RCW 42.56. Under that law, the public has the right to inspect and copy most city files. The mayor sets the day to day rules, and each department holds its own records.
You can read the full chapter at codepublishing.com. It tells you that Kent does not keep a single central index. The city says one central list would be too hard to maintain. Instead, each office keeps its own index and shares it when asked. The city has thousands of files in many formats, so you may need to ask more than one office for a full picture of a resident.
Short point. Start with the clerk. Most requests move fast.
Before we list sources, here is a lead in to the city code itself. Chapter 1.05 is posted on the CodePublishing site, which hosts the Kent Municipal Code in full. Browse the Kent public records chapter for the exact text.

The page shows how the chapter was last amended and which sections were repealed in 2015. Use it when you want to cite the law in a written request.
Kent Residents Directory Court Records
The Kent Municipal Court hears misdemeanor cases, traffic tickets, and local code matters that tie to Kent residents. The court runs some hearings over Zoom and takes in person visits at the front counter. You can read more about its mission and service at the Kent Municipal Court page. The court is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
If a case is a felony, a family law matter, or a civil suit over the district court limit, it goes to King County Superior Court. The King County Clerk runs the KC Script Portal for online access. You can learn how to set up an account, view files, and pay fees on the King County Clerk records page. Non certified copies cost $0.25 per page online. Certified copies are $5.00 for the first page and $1.00 for each page after that.
There is a lead in here too. The King County Clerk page shows the full fee list, the portal link, and the five business day response rule. Open the King County records access page to see it.

The page also lists how to ask for a fee waiver. If the clerk approves the waiver, it is good for 12 months. Keep that in mind if you expect to pull a lot of files on one case.
Statewide Kent Residents Directory Search
When you do not know which Kent court heard a case, use the statewide case search. The Washington Courts run a Name and Case Search tool at dw.courts.wa.gov. It covers municipal, district, superior, and appeals courts. You type a name or case number and the site shows matches across the whole state. Results give you the court of record, the case type, and the file date.
The tool is free. Use it first. It can save you a lot of time. The site does note that some case data may not show right, so call the court of record if something looks off.
Here is the lead in image. The Washington Courts portal is the main statewide hub for Kent case lookups and many other cities. Try the statewide case search before you contact the clerk.

The search is run by the Administrative Office of the Courts. Criminal history checks are not here. Those come from the Washington State Patrol WATCH system at watch.wsp.wa.gov.
City Clerk and Public Records Requests
The Kent City Clerk handles most resident record requests. Ask the clerk for council minutes, ordinances, resolutions, contracts, permits, and any written file the city keeps. Under RCW 42.56.520, the city must respond in five business days. The city may release the file, give a time estimate, ask for more detail, or deny with a legal reason.
Fees follow the default schedule in RCW 42.56.120. Paper copies cost $0.15 per page. Scans cost $0.10 per page. Inspection is free. Keep your request short and clear. Give dates, names, and case numbers when you can.
If the city denies a request, you can ask for a review or take it to court. RCW 42.56.550 puts the burden of proof on the agency, not on you.
Note: Kent will not create a new record just to answer a request. You must ask for records that already exist, per RCW 42.56.080.
Kent Residents Directory Property Records
Property files for Kent residents are held by King County, not the city. The King County Recorder's Office keeps deeds, liens, plats, and other land files. The King County Assessor sets values for tax use. You can look up owner names, sale history, and parcel maps on the county sites. Birth, death, and marriage records come from the King County Recorder or the state Department of Health at doh.wa.gov.
Historical files may live at the Washington State Digital Archives. The site holds early county and city records and is free to search at digitalarchives.wa.gov. Some Kent records from the early 20th century sit in that archive.
Kent Residents Directory Business Filings
Many Kent residents run small shops and firms. Business filings for those owners live at the Washington Secretary of State. Use the Corporations and Charities Filing System at ccfs.sos.wa.gov to find a business name, a UBI number, or a registered agent. Most filings are free to download as PDF.
This is a good first step when you want to tie a person to a company. The site shows officer names and the date the firm was set up. It also lists UCC filings, which can show liens and loans.
